Plug-in/Wireless Internet Access DHCP Procedure (Windows XP)

  1. Select “Start” , “Control Panel” , “Network Connections” (depending on the view set up, this might also be labeled “Network and Internet Connections”)
  2. Right click “Local Area Connection”, then click “Properties”
  3. In the “General Information” tab, check and highlight “Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)”
  4. Click “Properties” and select “Obtain an IP address automatically” and “Obtain DNS server address automatically”
  5. Click “OK” on all opened windows to close
  6. Restart computer if prompted
The computer is now configured for DHCP.
The IP address may need to be changed if one is already retained on your computer. (see below)


To release and renew IP addresses:
You must have administrative rights to your computer to release or renew your IP address.
  1. Go to a command prompt. (click “start” and choose “run”)
  2. In the “open” line, type “command”. A black box will open with a command prompt inside it.
  3. At the command prompt,    type:    Ipconfig /release - A notice should say the address has been released.
  4. At the command prompt,    type:    Ipconfig /renew
After a brief time, you should be notified that a new IP number is associated with your NIC card and you should be able to access the network.
