Equipment Available
for Use in the Library:
The following equipment is available for in-house use at the library. If you have questions about the equipment, call 331-4488 or stop by the reference or circulation service desks.
Equipment Available for Checkout:
All equipment requires an Urbandale Public Library card to check out. You must be 18 years or older, and a resident of Urbandale or the Des Moines metro area to check out equipment. Computers: There are multiple public access computers available for use in the reference department and the youth services department of the library. To log in to a computer, patrons must have a current Urbandale Public Library card. Guest passes are available for out-of-state visitors. Two 10-minute, stand-alone, Internet-usage computers are also available. Click here for more information on using computers in the Urbandale Public Library.
Fax Machine: If you need to send or receive a fax, stop by the reference desk. Reference staff will send and receive materials to be faxed. To send a fax the following fees apply: local call: $.25 per page; long distance: $.50 per page; overseas: $5.00 first page; $1.00 per page thereafter. To receive: $.10 cents per page. Flatbed Scanner: A scanner is available for use in the reference department. It is connected to a Pentium IV computer and has software to allow scanning of photos, documents and other items. Patrons may call 331-4488 to reserve the computer/scanner station. Intermediate computer skills are required to use this equipment. There is no charge to use the scanner.
LCD Projector: An LCD projector is available for use in library meeting rooms only. This item must be reserved. Please call 515-278-3945 option 4 to reserve the LCD projector. There is a $100 deposit that is refundable when the equipment is returned to the circulation desk in good condition. Patrons must be 18 years or older and have a library card from the Urbandale or Des Moines metro area to reserve and check out this equipment. This projector allows display of computer, video, and TV.

Listening Stations: Four listening stations are available in the library for listening to music cassettes, audio books on tape or music on CD. Two stations are located in the adult area near the circulation desk and two stations are located in the youth services department. Headphones must be used at the listening stations and are available at no charge. Please ask for headphones at the youth services desk for use in that area. These stations are available on a first come first served basis. No reservations are needed to use the listening stations.
Low Vision Viewer: The library has a low vision viewer available for patrons with vision problems. This equipment is located in the reference department. There is no charge for using this equipment. Please ask at the reference desk for location and availability of the low vision viewer. The viewer is used on a first come first served basis.

Magnifying Bar and Page: The library has magnifying bars and page magnifiers for use in the library. If you would like to use one of these items while in the library, ask at the reference desk.
Microfilm/fiche Reader (No Printer): A microfilm/microfiche reader is available for patron use. Please ask at the reference desk about availability and location of this machine. There is no charge to use the microfilm/fiche reader.
Opaque Projector: This piece of equipment is an enlarger. Items are placed on the bed of the machine and can be projected onto a large poster or paper for tracing purposes. Images must be traced. There is no charge to use this machine. The opaque projector can only be used in the library. This projector can be reserved by calling the circulation desk at 278-3945 option 3.

Photocopy Machines: The library has two black and white copy machines available for public use. One is located to the left of the circulation desk as you enter the library (look for the Copy Center sign). The other machine is located in the reference department in the Print/Copy Center. The machines are coin operated and all copies are 10¢ per page. Bill changers that accept $1, $5 and $10 bills are also available. The photocopy machine in the reference department Print/Copy Center has color copy capabilities. Color copies are 50¢ per page. All copy machines are self serve.
Typewriter: An electric typewriter is available for use in the library computer lab which is located in the reference department. Patrons may use the typewriter on a first come first served basis. There is no charge for use of the typewriter.

Viewing Stations: There are four viewing stations located in the library. Two are located in the adult area around the corner from the circulation desk and two stations are located in the youth services department. You may view cable TV or video cassettes. Two of the stations are able to show DVDs. Headphones are available for use with these stations. Viewing stations are available on a first come first served basis. No reservations are needed. A carted TV with DVD and VCR capabilities is available for use in the library study rooms.
Wheelchair: A wheelchair is available for use in the library. Please ask at the circulation desk, if you would like to use the wheelchair.
Audio Cassette Player: An audio cassette player is available for checkout at the circulation desk. Patrons may call ahead (278-3945 option 3) to reserve the player or stop by the circulation desk to checkout the player. There is no fee charged to checkout the cassette player.

Portable Screen: There is a portable tripod screen available for check out at the library. There is no fee to check out the portable screen. Please call the circulation desk at 278-3945 option 3 to reserve the portable screen.
