Who can take part in the Summer Reading Program?

All residents of Urbandale, the metro area, or other qualifying Iowa residents may take part.  Children from birth through sixth grade can take part in the program.  Children who are reading on their own may choose their own goals.  Those just beginning to read may choose to read 15 books.  More confident readers may choose to read 5 longer chapter books.  This year we are offering a reading group for those in 6th grade or older.  This group will focus on number of pages read.  For descriptions of all the book clubs for this year click here.

Can I read my own books?

We prefer the books you read be titles owned by the library. If you own the same book as the library, you may read that copy.  We are trying to promote use of the library.

What do I get when I finish?

Most importantly, you get the satisfaction of accomplishment. You will read books and you may even start school with better reading skills than you had at the end of the school year! If you turn in your reading log before July 26, you will receive incentive prizes (while they last!).

How do I get my incentive awards?

Readers must come to the library to receive their awards.  Library staff like to visit with each reader about at least one book they have read.

How is the theme chosen?

The State Library of Iowa is a member of the National Collaborative Summer Library Program.  This is a consortium of 45 state agencies and associations working together to provide high-quality summer reading program materials for children at the lowest cost possible for their public, private and school libraries.  Urbandale Public Library has been using these materials for a number of years.  For more information, check out the CSLP website at http://www.cslpreads.org/index.html.
