Library Circulation Assistant (FT)

SALARY: $13.01 /Hour

JOB TYPE: Full-Time (Hours: Mon-Thu 12-9pm, alternating Fri/Sat)

OPENING DATE: 09/03/14

CLOSING DATE: 09/17/14 11:59 PM

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:

Under the general direction of the Circulation Manager assist with the circulating library materials, ready materials to go back into public circulation, collect fines/fees and process reserved items for patrons. Assist patrons with directional information and provide reader’s advisory.

This is a full-time position with typical hours being Monday through Thursday 12-9pm and alternating Fridays and Saturdays.

ROUTINE JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assists patrons with requests for locating and checking out materials. This may include, but is not limited to: advising on reading selections, placing holds on unavailable material, providing instruction on appropriate use of electronic and print resources, explaining procedures, enforcing policies, issuing or renewing library cards, collecting fees/fines and updating patron accounts.
  • Checks in library material, which includes, but is not limited to: checking for damage, sensitizing, cleaning, sorting and re-shelving all library materials.
  • Performs miscellaneous duties, including opening and closing procedures, turning equipment on/off, balancing cash and credit receipts, preparing forms for collection of data for statistical analysis, etc..
  • Assures that the City’s mission, goals and objectives are fully supported and initiated.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Periodic Job Duties/Responsibilities

  • Reads shelf areas
  • Cleans work area
  • Attend staff meetings and training

TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS:

Any combination of education and experience providing the required skill and knowledge is qualifying.

Typical qualifications would be equivalent to:

  • High School Diploma with 2-3 years of related work experience
  • One year of Library experience
  • One year of customer service experience

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:

  • Ability to handle confidential information in a sensitive manner
  • Ability to take initiative and work efficiently with little direct supervision
  • Excellent written, oral, interpersonal communication and listening skills including, but not limited to: tact, diplomacy and professionalism when dealing with members of the public
  • Good problem solving ability
  • Sound judgment and decision making skills
  • Detail oriented
  • Basic mathematical skills

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:

Under the general direction of the Circulation Manager assist with the circulating library materials, ready materials to go back into public circulation, collect fines/fees and process reserved items for patrons. Assist patrons with directional information and provide reader’s advisory.

There are 2 part-time positions available. One is approximately 36 hours per week with typical hours being Monday through Thursday 12-9pm and Sundays 1-5pm. The other has a varied schedule with approximately 24-29 hours.
