Urbandale Public Library/The Great American Read

The Urbandale Public Library is pleased to announce that we have been selected for a grant from the American Library Association (ALA) and PBS to host programs around “The Great American Read,” an eight-part television series and multi-platform initiative that celebrates the joy of reading and the books we love.

More than 220 public libraries applied for the $2,000 grants, which will support public programs around the series. The Urbandale Public Library was one of just 50 libraries nationwide to be selected.  Click here to read our press release announcing this great news!

Hosted by television personality and journalist Meredith Vieira, “The Great American Read” will engage audiences with a list of America’s 100 favorite books,  encouraging audiences to read the books, vote from the list of 100, and share their personal connections to the title. The 100 favorite books can be found in the Urbandale Public Library’s collection.

Over the next several months,  we’ll host a variety of public programs, special events, and activities in support of “The Great American Read” initiative.

Series Premiere Watch Party, May 22 @ 7:00 PM.

The series will premiere Tuesday, May 22 with a two-hour program starting at 7 p.m. Central Time on local PBS stations (Iowa Public Television).  Join us at the Library for a Watch Party with free refreshments!

All Urbandale Reads

This summer, we’re introducing our first-ever All Urbandale Reads program.  All community members will be encouraged to read the same book and join in on a public book discussion.  The book we’ve selected is from “The Great American Read” list of 100 favorite books.  Can you guess the title?

  • All Urbandale Reads Book Announcement, June 2 @ 11:00 AM.

We’ll unveil the selected book during the Summer Rocks in Urbandale! celebration on June 2.  Several copies of the book will be available for checkout at that time.

  • Community Book Discussions, August 8 @ noon & 6:30 PM.

Join us for one of two community book discussions about the All Urbandale Reads book.  Get to  know your neighbors as your share your thoughts and learn from each other!

“Is the Book Better than the Movie?” Film and Book Discussions

Throughout the months of September and October, we’ll show movies that have been made from the list of 100 favorite books.  Each showing will be followed by a book vs. movie discussion.  Check our website this summer for more information.

Other activities include special displays, “sneak peek” advance showings of future episodes from the series, the chance to have your photo taken with your favorite book, and more!   Please continue to check our website and our event calendar for updates!
