How do I search the catalog?

  • To search the catalog, enter a word or phrase (title, author or subject) in the “Quick library search” box and click on “Anywhere” button
  • To limit a search by subject, title, author, or series, click on the appropriate search button after entering your search word(s)
  • You can also limit your search after you click on the “Search” button by choosing options in the “Narrow your search” menu to the left of your results, or choosing an option in the “Limit by:” drop down menu

How do I check my account?
Click on the “My Account” drop down menu at the top of the catalog screen select “Log in/Register.” Enter your Username or Barcode number and your password, then click the “Log in” button. You can also click on “My Account” from any page to check your account. Remember to click “Logout” when you’re done.

How to place a hold online?

  • Access the library “Catalog” and log in to your account
  • Search the catalog for the item you would like to place on hold
  • Once an item is located, click on the red “Place Hold” button on the right hand side of the item
  • On the next screen, choose the Urbandale Public Library” from the “Pickup Library” drop down menu (and click on the “Always use this pick-up location” so it will save this information for future holds)
  • Then confirm the item you are placing on hold by clicking on the “Submit Request” button

You will be notified by telephone or email when a hold is available. Hold items are available for pick up for approximately five days after you are notified. Items that are not checked out by the expiration date given in the notification will be removed from the hold shelf and a 50¢ fine will be charged to your account.

How do I cancel a hold?

  • Log in to your account on the library catalog
  • Click on the “My Account” drop down and select “Hold Requests”
  • Check the item(s) you would like to cancel
  • Click on the blue “Cancel Selected” button at the bottom of the screen
  • Confirm the cancellation by clicking the “Yes” button on the next screen

Holds not cancelled prior to becoming available will be charged a 50¢ fine. Cancelling a hold prior to it becoming available will NOT be assessed a fine.

Can I suspend a hold while I am on vacation?
You can suspend a hold on your account. While a hold is suspended, you will retain your place on the holds waiting list. You will move up the list during the suspension time period until you reach position 1. At that time you will remain in position 1 until the end date of the suspension. The next time the item is checked in it will be assigned to you. You will be notified via e-mail or phone when the item is available for you to pick up.

How do I suspend a hold?

  • Log in to your account on the library catalog
  • Click on the “My Account” drop down and select “Hold Requests”
  • Check the item(s) you would like to suspend

  • Click on the blue “Suspend/Reactivate Selected” button

  • On the next screen, enter the date you would like suspend your holds until and click on the “Submit” button
