Urbandale Public Library/NASA Reading Challenge

This September we’re inviting all ages to join NASA’s Artemis Project: To the Moon, Mars, and Beyond Reading Challenge!

September 1-30, 2022

The NASA Reading Challenge is an online reading challenge in which participants (families, teens, adults) are challenged to log their reading (minutes read per day). You can read whatever you’d like. Books, e-books, magazines, and comic books all count – and so does listening to an audiobook or being read to. The challenge also encourages participants to learn about the Artemis program and NASA’s plans for a new generation of crewed spaceflight through a variety of online-based activities you can complete alone or as a family. Log at least 60 minutes of reading throughout the month and earn 3 additional logging or activity badges in order to complete the challenge. Four people who complete the challenge will win a “Universe of Stories” water bottle and space-themed treats!

How to Participate:

To begin, create or log in to your Beanstack account and select NASA’s Artemis Project: To the Moon, Mars, and Beyond Reading Challenge under the Discover tab. Click here for a Beanstack Tutorial.

Log the number of minutes that you read and try out some activity badges!
To complete the challenge and be in the drawing to win a prize:

  1. You must log a minimum of 60 minutes of reading to earn 1 badge and
  2. Complete any other 3 logging and/or activity badges!

We will contact prize winners at the beginning of October 2022.

Even after you complete the 4 badges we encourage you to continue logging your reading minutes and completing the additional activities by September 30 to help the Urbandale Public Library compete against the hundreds of libraries across the nation that are also participating in Beanstack’s NASA-sponsored challenge for a chance to win circulation backpacks of STEM-related resources from the Space Science Institute. The Space Science Institute will award circulation backpacks with STEM-related resources to top-performing libraries.

You can also help boost our chances by using #STEAMinLIB and #BeanBlast on social media and tagging the Urbandale Public Library!

NASA is readying the first mission of the Artemis spaceflight program! In ancient Greek mythology, Artemis was the goddess of the Moon and twin sister to the sun god Apollo. Much like NASA’s Apollo program, which took humans to the Moon in the 1960s and 1970s, the Artemis program will take humans back to the Moon and prepare us for traveling to Mars and beyond for the first time. Learn about this and more in NASA’s Artemis Project: To the Moon, Mars, and Beyond Reading Challenge!
