You can now find a community fridge at the Urbandale Public Library in the Justin Martin Community Room. Together with the City of Urbandale and Food GRID, this initiative aims to eliminate food insecurity and reduce food waste.

Our Two Main Goals

  • Reduce food waste. By sharing surplus food, we help keep fresh, nutritious items out of landfills and put to good use in Urbandale.
  • Eliminate Food Insecurity. The community fridge is a free resource to ensure everyone has access to fresh, nutritious food.

Operating Hours

The community refrigerator will be accessible during normal library operating hours. When the Urbandale Public Library is closed, the refrigerator will not be accessible. The availability of food and other items may vary daily based on donations received.

Disclaimer: The contents of this fridge may contain allergens, including but not limited to milk, nuts, eggs, gluten, and soy. Individuals with food allergies or sensitivities should exercise caution and consume items at their own risk.

The Best Items for the Fridge Are:

  • Fruits, vegetables, ready-to-eat meals, proteins, dairy, and eggs.
  • Bread, baked goods, canned food, and pantry dry goods may be placed on the shelving next to the fridge.
  • If you’re donating something homemade, from a restaurant or event, please make sure it’s packaged, dated, and labeled correctly to ensure the safety of anyone with an allergy.
  • Fresh, packaged meat, poultry or fish should be placed in the freezer.

Visit the Food Grid to learn more about this initiative. You can also view a list of community fridges in Dallas and Polk County.

Metro Waste Authority Recycling Programs

Battery & Electronics Recycling

Accepted Items:

  • Household batteries (AA, AAA, C, D, 9V, and button batteries)
  • Batteries from power tools
  • Laptops, tablets, cell phones, and other rechargeable electronics

Collected items are taken to Metro Hazardous Waste Drop-Off in Bondurant. Certified staff refurbish electronics or break them down into recyclable materials. Batteries are sent to partners who recycle them into new materials, including new batteries.

If you have larger batteries, bulk electronics, or need doorstep pickup, visit Metro Waste Authority’s website for additional safe disposal options: www.WhereItShouldGo.com/Batteries

Holiday Lights

Each holiday season, the library partners with Metro Waste Authority to offer a holiday lights drop-off for any old or broken strands of lights you find as you deck the halls.

From November to January, residents can drop off lights in the collection box located in the library lobby. All lights will then be safely recycled at Metro Waste Authority’s Metro Hazardous Waste Drop-Off. An update and schedule for the 2025-26 season will be posted in early November.

LED, classic, plastic, and glass bulbs as well as net, icicle, and battery-powered lights are accepted. Just remember to keep them loose when you drop them in the collection box!
