Banned Book Series, Jane Gillette

When the conversation began about banning books in schools, libraries, and general access to the public, it seemed imperative that creatives speak out in the way that they could. This series of paintings reflects the painter’s love of reading, the comfort it brings, and the experiences reading can expose the reader to without leaving the comfort of a cozy place. These paintings represent the importance of protecting the right to read, to remember that books are written to be read, not banned.

Dreamer, Eirianeth Claire Hays

Using acrylic paint as my medium, I create vibrant, whimsical worlds that spark joy and curiosity in children and the young at heart. I am inspired by dreams, fairy tales, nature, and the magic found in everyday moments. My work invites viewers to pause, wonder, and momentarily escape into an imagined place. 
This exhibition features paintings from both my Little Houses series and my Dreamer series, reflecting an evolution in my practice. While my work began with illustrative houses, it has gradually shifted toward more dreamlike imagery, which best reflects the work I am most passionate about creating today.

Applications Open for 2027

We accept artist applications all year round and jury them in the fall for consideration for the following year. The deadline for submitting to be considered for the 2026 exhibitions has passed. Apply now to be considered for our 2027 lineup!

Want to Show in the Gallery?

The gallery has over 120 running feet of hanging space with lighting and a professional, flexible hanging system. We also have several glass cases for display of small to medium-sized 3-dimensional works as well! The gallery is located at the front of the library, surrounded by the public meeting rooms. This is a very high-traffic area. Most shows last four to six weeks.

These can be group shows or individual shows of artists from the metro and surrounding area. We jury all submissions in the early fall for consideration for the following year. Please apply at your convenience.

Mission

The Urbandale Public Library Art Gallery is a collaborative partnership among the Urbandale Public Library, the Urbandale Public Library Foundation, and the Urbandale Public Art Committee. The mission of this partnership is to encourage and facilitate public art of high aesthetic quality that celebrates the uniqueness of Urbandale, enhances the quality of life, makes art more accessible to the general public, and provides diverse resources for life-long learning and enjoyment.

Meetings of the Urbandale Public Library Art Gallery Committee will be held quarterly on the second Wednesday of January, April, July, and October. Meetings will be held at 5:30 PM at the Urbandale Public Library unless otherwise communicated to the public.

Gallery Founded 

The Urbandale Public Library’s art gallery was established in 2013 to make art more accessible to the general public and to provide a venue for local artists to display their work. The gallery has proven to be a popular community asset, showcasing a wide variety of visual arts and attracting hundreds of visitors each year.
