The Leaves are Starting to Turn, Mindy Buyck Much like the Earth, life has seasons that reflect the events of the time. These pieces speak of autumn. A time of reflection and transition into a season of rest. Marked by darker evenings and the warm colors blending to cool that inspire nostalgia of the summer that was and years passed. This time of reflection is captured in aged filter photography and loose inks that portray the fading light and memory. This transition is something I know well now as my kids are graduating high school in the next couple of years and starting college. Artist Statement: I am a scientist, photographer and fluid media artist.  Photography is the perfect marriage of art and science. It’s painting with the physics of light and when I first learned photography, developing was chemistry. It requires using standard operating procedures, ratios, metering and technical execution. Ink on the other hand, is chaotic creativity at its finest. When I approach a blank surface to paint, I have a concept in mind. It seems like the inks come to the surface with a concept of their own and now we negotiate. Often, they win, and I walk away with a painting nothing like what I intended. Glass, The Formless Liquid, Art Ciccotti The glass that is on exhibit is a testimony to the passion, the vision, and the struggle glassblowers go through daily to produce the varied kinds of glass here on display. This exhibit is the result of 40 years of learning and creating handblown glass.  Artist Statement: Making art is a passion for me. I blow glass because of the rush of seeing an object take shape from a white-hot mass to a finished piece. After weeks of planning, sometimes months, the design comes together in a piece within a short period of time. It is intense! My objective is to produce a piece of work that not only is unique, but that brings a sense of visual and tactile pleasure.  www.ciccottiartglass.com | [email protected]

The application window for our 2027 Exhibition Schedule has passed.

If you would like to be considered for display in the gallery in 2028, please read the art gallery policy and click the button below to apply. We accept artist applications year-round and jury them in the fall for consideration for the following year. We will contact you in late October to let you know if you have been accepted or not. 

Want to Show in the Gallery?

The gallery has over 120 running feet of hanging space with lighting and a professional, flexible hanging system. We also have several glass cases for display of small to medium-sized 3-dimensional works as well! The gallery is located at the front of the library, surrounded by the public meeting rooms. This is a very high-traffic area. Most shows run for about six weeks.

Due to the large number of applications we get annually, all individual artists who apply will be paired up with another artist of the gallery's choice to share the space. We also encourage groups to apply from the metro and surrounding area. We jury all submissions in the early fall for consideration for the following year. Please apply at your convenience.

Mission

The Urbandale Public Library Art Gallery is a collaborative partnership among the Urbandale Public Library, the Urbandale Public Library Foundation, and the Urbandale Public Art Committee. The mission of this partnership is to encourage and facilitate public art of high aesthetic quality that celebrates the uniqueness of Urbandale, enhances the quality of life, makes art more accessible to the general public, and provides diverse resources for life-long learning and enjoyment.

Meetings of the Urbandale Public Library Art Gallery Committee will be held quarterly on the second Wednesday of January, April, July, and October. Meetings will be held at 5:30 PM at the Urbandale Public Library unless otherwise communicated to the public.

Gallery Founded 

The Urbandale Public Library’s art gallery was established in 2013 to make art more accessible to the general public and to provide a venue for local artists to display their work. The gallery has proven to be a popular community asset, showcasing a wide variety of visual arts and attracting hundreds of visitors each year.
