Garden Behind Glass, Nancy Carlson

Welcome to Garden Behind Glass, an exhibition that reimagines nature through a bold, graphic lens. Applying acrylic paint directly to the reverse side of glass, the artist creates striking, high-contrast imagery reminiscent of contemporary stained glass. Defined by clean, defining shapes rather than layers, each piece is housed in a uniquely upcycled frame, marrying environmental mindfulness with vibrant artistry.

This collection captures the structural beauty of the backyard ecosystem, distilling flowers, bees, butterflies, and birds into modern icons of color and light. Extending the garden theme into three dimensions, the exhibition also features hand-painted flower vases. Designed for year-round display, these functional art pieces bring the enduring spirit of nature into the home, bridging the gap between the world outside and our everyday living spaces.

Artist Statement: Inspired by the beauty of stained glass, these works combine bold graphic design with vibrant acrylic paint on reverse glass. Recycled and repurposed materials give each piece new life, creating colorful artwork that shifts with changing light and different backgrounds. Nancy Carlson has always been fascinated by stained glass. Inspired by its bold lines and vibrant color, she has developed a distinctive style that recreates the stained-glass look by using black paint pen and acrylic paint on the reverse side of glass. Nancy studied Graphic Design at Iowa State University and draws inspiration from the Impressionists and their unconventional use of color, often incorporating vibrant, exaggerated hues into her work. Committed to recycling and repurposing, Nancy gives new life to thrifted frames and glass objects. Her three-dimensional pieces are finished with a durable, hand-washable coating. She also welcomes commission work.

Moments of Worship, Courtney Garcia (Moller)

Moments of Worship is a collection of live paintings created during worship services and significant moments throughout the Christian calendar. Each piece was painted in real time as a visual response to Scripture, music, prayer, and the atmosphere of worship. As each service unfolded, the paintings grew alongside it, with colors, details, and symbolism emerging throughout the creative process.

From Christmas and Easter to community worship nights and special services like Martin Luther King Jr. Day, each painting captures a unique moment of reflection, hope, and celebration. Together, this collection explores how art can preserve meaningful experiences and transform moments of worship into lasting visual expressions of faith.

Artist Statement: Courtney Garcia is a visual artist, muralist, and live painter based in West Des Moines, Iowa. Through her business, Art You Wood Love, she creates original paintings, murals, and live event artwork inspired by nature, faith, and her personal journey of recovery. Her signature style blends flowing abstract backgrounds, continuous line work, and touches of realism to create pieces that reflect grace, hope, transformation, and connection. Courtney's passion is creating meaningful art that brings people together and points others toward beauty, JOY, and the Good News.

A Passport in Pigments, Viktoriya Zilbermints

A Passport in Pigments aims to capture the delight and complexity of moments large and small. From a still life that zooms in on the sun playing in the crevices of a crystal vase to a glimpse down a time-weathered alley in a Portuguese town, the paintings invite the viewer to pause and take a second look at the ordinary, and allow the ordinary to become extraordinary. Bringing together seemingly disparate subjects and styles, the works in the first show from Viktoriya Zilbermints are united by a sense of joyful observation and the belief that there is beauty to be found on far-flung travels — and in one’s own backyard.

Artist Statement: With A Passport in Pigments, I tried to present moments of joy that I experienced in my adopted home state of Iowa and on my travels. I moved here from Kiev, Ukraine, in 1993, and I still find surprises around every turn, finding beauty in what, at first glance, appears mundane. I picked up a paintbrush at the tail end of a decades-long career in software development and quickly became a strong believer in the therapeutic power of art. From my many adventures over the years, within the tranquility of Iowa landscapes and beyond its borders, I’ve found inspiration. For my first show, I intended to give a taste of all my explorations and ambitions in art and to capture the beauty that I’ve seen everywhere, from my daily walks to my travels to small moments at home.
