Rural Glances, Meredith DrummondWhether chiseled by nature’s rivers or a farmer’s plow, America’s landscapes and agricultural buildings captivate me. Many years as a home-design magazine content creator blessed me with travels to rural pockets of America. The beauty of these regions astounded me and kick-started my art quest, especially in Iowa. “Iowa’s flat, right?” “They grow potatoes there, don’t they?” Such misconceptions about Iowa by my friends awaited me whenever I returned for visits to my hometown outside New York City. Proving them wrong, maybe, inspired my painting journey. Portraying the fertile swells, shapes, lines, and vibrant cropland colors of Iowa —and landscapes beyond —became my bliss. The images I portray are rendered in oil paint. Surfaces are illustration board, canvas remnant, or sturdy paper. Most are small, from postcard to wall-calendar size. And all are of locales that catch my eye for their rustic textures, patinated colors, or hidden hues—a rarity amongst today's monotonous, cookie-cutter structures and developments. But as our barns and cropland succumb to development or climate change, savoring and saving these rural treasures in paintings has become my focus. In today’s ‘swipe right,’ ‘text me,’ ‘emogee’ culture, I hope my paintings invite a moment of calm for their viewers. Entice them to come closer, to linger, to focus their eyes on the layered colors and solitary structures within my images.

Sense of Place, Connie CerrettiThe subjects of my paintings in this exhibit are from natural settings. In my artwork, I like to emphasize to the viewer the specialness of a place that moved me enough to capture its essence as well as its appearance. www.iowaartistdirectory.org/artist/connie-cerretti | conniecerretti@gmail.com
